Gowri Anandarajah, MD
Biography
Dr. Anandarajah is Professor of Family Medicine (Clinical) and has been on the faculty at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University since 1992. She is currently Director of Faculty Development and Co-Director of the Global Health Faculty Development Fellowship in the Brown Department of Family Medicine and previously served as Residency Director. She is currently Associate Medical Director at Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island.
She attended Dartmouth College and the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and completed her residency training in Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident. She also completed a Faculty Leadership Fellowship at Brown. While at Brown, she has held numerous clinical and educational leadership positions including Team Leader (Clinical Director) of one of the Brown Family Medicine Residency’s resident/faculty teaching practices, and as CoDirector of the medical school’s Doctoring Course.
She is nationally known for her scholarly work, particularly in the area of spirituality in health. Her HOPE questions for spiritual assessment have been translated into at least 7 languages and are used around the world. Other areas of academic interest include: medical education; care of underserved populations; global health; professional development; communication skills; cultural diversity; hospice & palliative care; and integrated primary care-behavioral health.
Dr. Anandarajah has been a family physician in multiple settings, including community health centers, academia (hospital and clinic attending), emergency rooms and hospice and has served in leadership positions in national professional organizations and serves on the boards of local agencies caring for underserved communities. Currently she is Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Gateway Healthcare Foundation, formerly Gateway Healthcare, Inc., the largest community behavioral health organization in Rhode Island.
Dr. Anandarajah provides faculty development for the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC) and serves as Co-Course Director, Health Systems and Policy I for the Primary Care—Population Medicine Program.
